Why budget plans cost less
Budget and prepaid carriers rent space on the same big networks the major carriers use.
Budget and prepaid carriers rent space on the same big networks the major carriers use. You get the same towers and usually the same coverage. They charge less because they skip stores, contracts and bundled extras, and some ask you to pay a few months up front.
What you might give up
During busy times, some budget plans get lower priority on the network, so speeds can slow in crowded places like stadiums. Hotspot data, international roaming and streaming perks are often limited. For most people who mainly use Wi-Fi at home and work, the difference is hard to notice.
How to switch without losing your number
Check that your phone is unlocked and works on the new network. Get your account number and a transfer PIN from your current carrier. Start service with the new carrier and ask to bring your number. Don't cancel your old plan first, or you may lose the number. The transfer usually takes minutes to a few hours.
