How Mississippi taxes your paycheck

Mississippi taxes wages at a flat 4%, after the first $10,000 of taxable income, which is taxed at 0%. Deductions and exemptions come off first:

  • Standard deduction: $2,300 single, $4,600 married filing jointly.
  • Personal exemption: $6,000 per filer.
  • Dependent exemption: $1,500 each.

Federal taxes on every paycheck

Federal income tax is withheld using the IRS percentage method in Publication 15-T for 2026, based on your W-4. Social Security takes 6.2% of wages up to $184,500 a year, and Medicare takes 1.45%, plus 0.9% on wages over $200,000. These are the same in every state.
