How Alabama taxes your paycheck
Alabama uses tax brackets, so each rate applies only to the part of your taxable income inside that bracket. 2026 brackets:
| Rate | Single | Married filing jointly |
|---|---|---|
| 2% | $0 to $500 | $0 to $1,000 |
| 4% | $500 to $3,000 | $1,000 to $6,000 |
| 5% | Over $3,000 | Over $6,000 |
Before the brackets apply:
- Standard deduction of up to $3,000 single or $8,500 married, which shrinks as income rises above $23,499.
- Personal exemption: $1,500 per filer.
- Dependent exemption of $300 to $1,000 each, depending on income.
- You can subtract the federal income tax you pay.
Alabama lets you subtract federal income tax, which is included.
Federal taxes on every paycheck
Federal income tax is withheld using the IRS percentage method in Publication 15-T for 2026, based on your W-4. Social Security takes 6.2% of wages up to $184,500 a year, and Medicare takes 1.45%, plus 0.9% on wages over $200,000. These are the same in every state.
