How Illinois taxes your paycheck

Federal income tax is withheld using the IRS percentage method in Publication 15-T for 2026, based on your W-4. Social Security takes 6.2% of wages up to $184,500 a year, and Medicare takes 1.45%, plus 0.9% on wages over $200,000. These are the same in every state.
